LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Letter from the Editor

The Hilltop editor-in-chief Jasper Smith.

To the class of 2026, welcome to the Mecca! For some of you, you are miles away from home for the first time in a big city. You may be feeling a range of emotions as you unload the final box into your dorm, watch your family drive away or finally meet the friends you made at New Student Orientation. I implore you to take it all in, as you cultivate your journey as a student here at Howard University.

You stand on the shoulders of giants. A range of notable alumni have once been in your shoes, such as Vice President Kamala Harris, late actor Chadwick Boseman and our Hilltop founder, Zora Neale Hurston.

While Howard  is well-known for its famous alumni, the University is also known for the historic events that have taken place on this campus – various protests, renowned speeches, performances and more – all of which have been documented by our award-winning newspaper, The Hilltop.

The Hilltop serves as the student voice of Howard University, seeking to embody the University motto of truth and service. Our mission this year is to produce quality news stories that amplify the experiences of the Howard community in a spirit of excellence. From news and politics, sports, culture and campus, The Hilltop is dedicated to providing free access to informative, thought-provoking content.

While you walk the yard, sit in your lectures and explore this lively city, think of the various ways you want to be remembered at Howard, as The Hilltop will be here to chronical it every step of the way.

In truth and service,

Jasper Smith
