Freshman legal communications major, Cameron Wright, is a big SZA fan. The sweater he wears is inspired by the artist’s 2017 album CTRL.
“It is kind of hot but chill,” he said. ”So I wanted to have a combo of knitwear and shorts to be different.”
Some students went outside the box with their outfits, putting their personality and creativity into the process. Assad Martin, a senior computer science major from Ashburn, Virginia, by way of Apple Valley, California, believes that his outfit gave him an alter ego.
“It was supposed to be like a ‘chill’ fit because it’s just a shirt and jeans. But it’s kinda like an off-duty superhero or anime character, which is why I’m wearing the anime shirt and big red boots,” he said.
Fashion trends from the early aughts have returned and found a special home on Howard’s campus. Zoë Savage-Schiller, a senior honors human development major, chose an outfit inspired by an era known for iconic brand imagery.
“I love Ed Hardy, and I love that this style is coming back,” said Savage-Schiller. “I wanted to show my personality through the fit by adding a pop of color.”
Students come to Howard from around the world, representing different cultures and identities. Ja’Shaylee Minor, freshman political science major, says she expected Howard’s fashion game to be as diverse as its student body.
“I was fascinated to see everyone dressed up on The yard, as they all had unique styles and values related to fashion.”
Located at the center of Howard’s main campus, The Yard serves as a gathering place and a passageway. On the first day of class, students at various stages of their matriculation cross paths, exchanging compliments, culture, and parts of themselves.
