On Thursday, Aug. 25 Howard University’s Office of Corporate Relations and Campus Life held a Corporate Day on the Yard at Howard University. The day was organized to allow students to connect with the university’s corporate partners and learn about career opportunities.

Eighteen businesses set up on the Yard at around 11 a.m. Thursday to begin the day. Businesses including JP Morgan Chase & Co, JUST Egg and Lockheed Martin were on the Yard to inform students on the opportunities available to them. There were a variety of career options for students including real estate, financial and management companies.

Business representatives spent the day informing students of their businesses’ open opportunities and encouraged students to connect with them to find the right place for their interests. Target representatives on the Yard spoke to students about the company’s upcoming internship opportunities in all areas of retail. Real estate companies such as JLL informed students of job opportunities to students new to the workforce and financial companies like Fitzgerald Financial Group spoke on their education opportunities for students.

“We planned Corporate Day on the Yard to be partially a welcome back to students. We wanted it to be an opportunity to have them network with our corporate partners, but in a very informal way so that they can learn early in their tenure here about job opportunities, but do it in a way that’s fun and energetic,” Assistant Vice President of Corporate Relations Allison Morgan Bryant, Ph.D said.

The Hilltop spoke with a representative of one of the companies of the fair, Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT), a company that promotes and assists students of color in becoming leaders in the workforce. MLT’s goal was to get students to sign up for their career preparation program.

“We are geared towards getting minorities into the corporate world, so we are here to give students experience on how to navigate the corporate space, prepare for internships, build their resume and so much more,” MLT career coach Crystal Williams said.

Students were also able to grab a few free gifts from Corporate Day as lines formed to speak to the companies present. Procter & Gamble (P&G) was one of the businesses in attendance that managed to draw in students to connect with their many recruiters about internship and job opportunities in exchange for bags with samples of their many company products.

Corporate day on the Yard concluded around 3 p.m. after several Howard students got the chance to connect with businesses on the Yard and take advantage of this event.

“It can be hard to get yourself into the business world and so many of the companies I’m interested in were here today so it’s great that we can have these events thrown for us to really make those connections. It’s definitely worth it to network wherever you can,” Brandon Knoll, Howard University sophomore and business major said.
