With the end of the school year approaching, the Hilltop has compiled a list of April activities and events in D.C. that are not only budget-friendly, but also fun and exciting.

D.C. has several fun and engaging events for everyone to enjoy. With the end of the school year approaching, the Hilltop has compiled a list of April activities and events in D.C. that are not only budget-friendly, but also fun and exciting.

  1. Enjoy a theater performance

A number of contemporary and classic English plays are slated to be performed in April at the Kennedy Center Opera House in D.C. Plays range from “Oklahoma”, “Means Girls” all the way to Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” “Much Ado About Nothing” is scheduled from April 21-30, “Mean Girls” is scheduled from April 5- 24, and Oklahoma is scheduled from April 5-10.   1. Participate in the Japanese Culture Week

Come and take part in Japanese culture week this April. Sponsored by the Library of Congress, Japanese Culture week will be hosted from April 6- 9. The virtual event will showcase Japanese artworks, storytelling and many more integral aspects of Japanese culture. For more information, click here

  1. Go to a Lorde concert

With many artists and musicians resuming their tours and concerts, D.C. will be rich with a multitude of concerts by many popular artists in April. With the release of her latest album “Solar Power,” and known for her electro pop and indie vibes, Lorde will be performing in the city on April 16. More information can be found here.

  1. Watch a movie through FilmFest DC 

The FilmFestDC film festival celebrates the work of many contents and film creators from the international film community. With the festival being hybrid this year, moviegoers can enjoy a movie at many in-person locations around D.C. and in virtual settings as well. The locations have not yet been updated to the website. The film festival is expected to run from April 21 to May 1.

  1. Explore American crafts at the Smithsonian Craft Show

The Smithsonian Women’s Committee hosts the annual Smithsonian Craft Show where several craftsmen and visual artists display their work. The proceeds from the show go directly to fund other Smithsonian museums, facilities as well as the National Zoo. The Smithsonian Craft Show is scheduled for April 21, and the cost of the tickets ranges at the lowest of $20. More details can be found here

  1. Pay a visit to the Azalea Festival at the National Arboretum

The National Arboretum will host a free Azalea festival during the peak bloom time in April. Soak in the spring weather as you look at the red, purple and pink flowers decking the landscape. The National Arboretum is located at 3501 New York Ave. NE, Washington, D.C. 20002. More details can be found here

  1. Experience Artechouse’s Pixelbloom Exhibit

With only three locations across the country, Artechouse features experiential art through immersive and interactive such as lights, projections, etc. Artechouse DC plans to host the fifth annual spring exhibition from March 11 to June 5. For those interested in nature, art or simply want to explore the intersection between art and technology, Artechouse D.C. is a must-visit. Artechouse DC is located at 1238 Maryland Ave. SW, Washington, D.C. 20024.

  1. Learn meditation with The Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art

With finals season rapidly approaching, meditation can alleviate pent-up stress and anxiety. This April, The Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art will offer free 30-minute meditation sessions every Friday. To register for these online sessions, click here.

As the oldest botanical garden in America, D.C.’s National Botanic Garden is a must-go for anyone who wants to bask in the spring sun and soak in the beauty of the plants and flowers of the garden. The National Botanic Garden is located at 100 Maryland Ave. SW, Washington, D.C. 20001.

  1. Celebrate Black-Owned Businesses at the Afro Soca Love: D.C. Black-Owned Marketplace and Afterparty

Come support the several Black-owned businesses from April 9-10. The event not only features Black-owned businesses, but also food vendors, DJs, photo booths and giveaways. Early bird passes are currently $5 and children 16 and under have free admissions. The event location is at 2221 Adams Place NE, Washington, D.C. 20018. For more information, click here
