The Howard University Bison played two away games in the Legends Classic at High Point University, losing one and winning the other.
The Bison participated in the Legends Classic over the weekend at High Point University in North Carolina. On November 20, the team competed against the High Point Panthers and were defeated, ending the game with 63-73.
Despite the loss, Steve Settle was able to end the game with 21 points and Randy Brumant followed with 10 points. The first half ended at 34-29 with the Panthers in the lead. With 17:51 remaining in the second half, the Bison went on a 16-2 run, leading 46-41 with 11:35 left to play. seTai Bibbs was able to carry the Bison to their first lead of the game with a score of 42-41.
The Panthers continued pressing forward allowing them to reclaim the lead with 6:18 remaining. With 3:20 three minutes of gameplay to go, Elijah Hawkins tied the game with 60-60 with a driving layup. However, the Bison’s persistent efforts were not enough to outplay the Panthers.
The Bison continued on in their second game of the classic on November 21, where they played the William & Mary Tribe and ended the game with a victory, 82-76. The Bison won the tipoff but the Tribe quickly put up the first basket of the game.
Brumant gave the Bison their first points of the game with a layup. The two teams kept the score fairly close throughout the first half, but the Bison gained their first lead of the night 24-21 with a three pointer from Kyle Foster with 8:29 to go.
The first half ended with a score of 44-45 with the Tribe in the lead. The Bison started the second half off strong with a layup from Settle. With the lead switching back and forth between the teams a total of 20 times, the Bison and the Tribe battled to the very end, but the momentum of the Bison led them to close out the game.
Settle led the team with 19 points and Hawkins ended the game with 12 points. The Bison walked away from the Legends Classic with an overall record of 4-2. The team will return to play Mount St Mary University at Knott Arena, Tuesday, Nov 30, tip-off time is slated at 7 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium to host Austin Peay State, Friday, Nov. 26 at 3 p.m.
