The Hilltop

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

The Chief Copy Editor Reflects on Her Hilltop Service

When I think back to the girl I was when I initially began my journey at Howard University, I have to laugh out loud. At 18 years old, I was moving 12 hours away from home and scared out of my mind. Living on my own, where I knew absolutely no one was by far my most daunting venture yet. I wish I could tell that girl then that there was nothing to worry about.  As I reflect on my time at Howard, I feel overwhelmed with immense gratitude, especially for the remarkable experience I have had being a part of The Hilltop.

As a young journalist at Howard, I very quickly began to understand the legacy and importance of The Hilltop. I took note of the gentle reminders such as the sign in front of Quad, the stacks of newspapers in front of every academic building, and the sense of admiration that came from my professors every time it was mentioned. I knew that if I wanted to become the journalist I aspired to be, becoming a part of this newspaper was necessary. However, never in a million years would I have suspected the feeling of so much pride in being able to say that I am chief copy editor for the nation’s oldest Black newspaper.

I am forever indebted to this publication for helping me grow and improve as a journalist. While my coursework provided a great framework, it was here that I was molded into a true journalist. It was The Hilltop that taught me how to navigate tight deadlines, approach sensitive subjects, AP Style and write so strongly. Mr. Alexander’s blunt critiques every week and the meticulous editing from my then-section editor have taken me further than any journalism class I took at Howard.

I have covered so many great topics that have made  a real impact on our campus and been able to work so closely with so many other gifted journalists. I am now a part of the most amazing network of talent and support. Once again, I am eternally grateful and indebted to The Hilltop for providing me with that. This past school year has felt like a dream come true in more ways than one. From contributing to 2024 presidential election coverage while a Howard alumna was running for president to forming incredible bonds with everyone on staff, this was more than my 18 year old self could’ve ever imagined.

To my copy desk, Anijah Franklin, Jalyn Lovelady and Aniyah Genama, thank you for your hard work and allowing me to lead you this school year. Staying up every Sunday until 4 a.m. copy editing stories is not for the weak, but you all make it look easy. It was truly a blessing to work with such talented and inspiring women every weekend. To the section editors, I have had the best time getting to know each and every one of you this year. I know you will all go on to do wonderful things. To Juan and Sydney, thank you for always making sure the team felt seen and heard. Lastly, to JD, thank you for your guidance over the years and entrusting me with this role.

Sincerely,

Camiryn Stepteau
