The Philadelphia Eagles, led by quarterback Jalen Hurts, are the 2025 Super Bowl LIX champions, claiming the title with a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs, who aimed to make NFL history with a third consecutive Super Bowl win, met an impenetrable Eagles defense and an offense led by Super Bowl MVP Hurts. The Eagles secured a commanding 40-22 victory, avenging their loss to Kansas City in the 2023 Super Bowl.

Throughout his career, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes proved nearly unstoppable on the NFL’s biggest stage, taking the team to the Super Bowl five times. However, in Super Bowl LIX,  Hurts joined Joe Burrow and Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks to defeat Mahomes in the postseason, according to CBS Sports

Under the bright lights, Hurts delivered, showcasing his versatility as both a passer and runner with his leadership skills, helping to keep his team focused and poised on their way to victory.

He finished with 221 passing yards, two touchdowns, 72 rushing yards on 11 carries and a rushing touchdown despite throwing an interception in the second quarter.

During a press conference after the game, Hurts reflected on his journey and the long road to victory.

“Things come right on time,” Hurts said. “The last time around, it wasn’t our time, it wasn’t my time, and sometimes you have to accept that and wait your turn.”

His public journey showcases perseverance, dating back to his college career at the University of Alabama. After being benched at halftime during the 2018 national championship game against the University of Georgia, he transferred to the University of Oklahoma where he had a career best season and became a Heisman Trophy finalist, according to CBS Sports

He was drafted by the Eagles in 2020 and endured a loss at the Super Bowl in 2023 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chris Campbell, a 2024 Howard graduate, spoke about the inspirational qualities of Hurts’ journey.

“I followed his career from a stellar freshman season to getting benched, transferring and becoming a Heisman candidate,” Campbell said. “With the NFL shifting to mobile QBs, the Eagles needed more agility after [Carson Wentz’] ACL injury. I was excited to see another Black QB on the roster. Given his history of being underestimated, I knew Jalen would prove himself as a top quarterback.”

Philadelphia’s Celebration and Impact

As the final whistle blew in Lincoln Financial Field, confetti rained down on the Eagles, marking a triumphant moment for the franchise and its fans. Head coach Nick Sirianni, who once faced skepticism early in his career for the Eagles’ slow 2-2 start to the season, celebrated his players, crediting their hard work, discipline and unwavering belief in their ability to succeed.

“Our team had great habits that prepared us to win each and every week, with the way they practiced and walked through and connected. I believe that it is your habits that make you who you are,” Sirianni said in a post-game press conference.

Tafari Stephenson, a senior environmental science major, shared his thoughts on the impact of the Eagles’ victory on Philadelphia.

“This win will have a bigger positive impact on Philly than a negative one. While vandalism is a downside, studies show that higher public morale boosts productivity and lowers crime,” Stephenson said.

More than one million fans flooded the streets of Philadelphia on Feb. 14 to celebrate the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory with a parade. This marked the team’s final major appearance before the free agency period begins in March, when teams can sign new players, re-sign key contributors, or lose talent to other franchises as they gear up for the next season.
