Speakout: How Does It Feel to Be a First-Time Voter in the 2024 Presidential Election?

Howard’s history-making freshman class is full of students who will cast their first-ever vote in a history-making election this fall.

Students in the class of 2028 not only make up the largest incoming class in Howard’s history, but many will also be voting for the first time this November.

So for the Aug. 19 print issue of the paper, The Hilltop wanted to learn more about what that means to them.

Robert Hardy, 18, Atlanta

Freshman Computer Science Major

“I feel very inspired and very involved. I feel like I get to dictate the future almost.”

(Juan Benn Jr,/The Hilltop)

Adja Diop, 18, Newark, New Jersey

Freshman Undecided Major

“I’m really excited. I want to vote. I know who I’m going to vote for. Kamala is going to win. We need a big game-changer in the United States…We have a lot of faith in her.”

(Juan Benn Jr,/The Hilltop)

Arianna Aryes, 17, Brooklyn, New York

Freshman Health Sciences Major

“It feels actually very special…Not being able to vote, you don’t really have much impact on who’s in office and, therefore, who’s representing you…I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for me to allow myself to learn more about the political state of our world.”

(Juan Benn Jr./The Hilltop)

Charlie McAdoo III, 18, Atlanta

Freshman Mechanical Engineering Major

“I feel excited and deeply connected with this race knowing that Kamala Harris is an alum of Howard and that she has made multiple appearances on campus.”

(Juan Benn Jr./The Hilltop)

Naiya Blanco, 17, Houston

Freshman Theater Major, Acting Concentration

“Being a first-time voter, I’m very excited. I’ve been trying to pick out my outfit to go because voting for me is such a big deal for so many reasons.”

(Juan Benn Jr,/The Hilltop)

Amir Abdul, 18, Portland, Oregon

Freshman Physics Major

“I think this is a really meaningful election. I love that this is the one I’m going to be starting off my political voting history.”
