Elections Commission Reveals Howard’s Next Student Leaders

The Howard University Elections Commission revealed the spring election victors for university student leadership positions on Friday, including those within Howard University Student Association (HUSA) Executive, Royal Court and HUSA Senate.

Elections Commissioner and senior Sarah Slaughter stood at the top of the Frederick Douglas Memorial Hall staircase behind a podium in front of a crowd of more than 150 students, listing off the names of those students who were elected.

Cheers and applause filled the yard as Nia Naylor and Murphy Jones IV were announced to serve as the president and vice president for HUSA’s 63rd Administration. They will succeed current HUSA President Jordyn Allen and Vice President Eryka Anabell Clarke.

Naylor screamed upon hearing her name called as the next president.

“I was so relieved that Murphy and I were successful! We worked so hard to be victorious and all our hard work paid off,” Naylor said. “I was overflowing with joy and was extremely grateful to God.”

She continued by adding, “With close to a new make up of the HUSA Senate, I’m excited to see the changes that are created within it. I look forward to seeing everyone’s ideas and platform points come into fruition.”

Sophomore Joshua John-Louis was re-elected to his position as a College of Fine Arts senator, and plans to continue with the momentum from his previous term. John-Louis expressed after the election that he felt great about his race and although he ran unopposed, he couldn’t remain too comfortable in his seat.

He also announced his campaign for Chairman of the Senate for his second term as senator, and said he is “working to complete the collective Senate vision in order to get the ball moving to better the student experience for next semester.”

Slaughter shared she was very happy with how seamless the election cycle was this year. “In comparison to last year’s drama surrounding the election, tabulations were remarkably smooth, especially with the new third party ballot creator,” she said. This semester, the Elections Committee used Election Buddy Services to conduct the election.

Slaughter outlined the intense work she and her six-person elections commission staff put in over the two weeks of candidate campaigning. She went on to say that, “I was the only returning member from last year’s commission, which initially made training the entire new team on the process challenging, but ultimately I am grateful for those with whom I made early selections.”
