Howard Volleyball’s Senior Night Brings Eighth Straight Win

The Howard University women’s volleyball team continues their win streak with a victory over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent, the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs.

The Howard University women’s volleyball team continues their win streak with a victory over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent, the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs.

The Bison now hold a record of 14-11 with an (11-2 MEAC), while South Carolina State falls to 0-22 (0-13 MEAC).

Prior to starting the match, Howard recognized four seniors for their annual Senior Day. Busisiwe Banda (Cedar Park, Tx.), Nina Askew (Fairfax, Va.), Kailyn Williams (Arlington, Tx.) and Milexa Cardona (Kissimmee, Fl.).

All four seniors started and played each set. Askew led the Bison with 10 total blocks, while Cardona led the Bison with 22 assists.

After three lead changes in the first set, the Lady Bulldogs led 17-15. The Bison scored six straight points unanswered to take a 21-17 lead. South Carolina State started to make a comeback, but it was too late; Howard took the first set 25-20.

The Bison dominated game two 25-13, with a start to finish victory. Their .346 hitting percentage was a game high, which put them ahead 2-0. 

Even with early struggles, the Lady Bulldogs kept battling. After being down 21-19 in set three, South Carolina State went on a 6-2 run to win 25-23, this cut the Bison’s lead to 2-1.

This is the Lady Bulldogs’ first set win of the season. Junior Maria Julia Vedovatto Loureiro led the games with 14 kills and nine digs, one dig shy of having a double-double performance.

 In set four, the Lady Bulldogs brought the energy from their last match and took an early 8-4 lead. The Bison were able to muster up their own energy with a 12-4 run. This was the last lead change of the game as Howard won the set 25-20, and the match 3-1. 

Efficient play from the Bison Freshmen. Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Tx.) led the Bison with nine kills, Taylor Johnson  (South Fulton, Ga.) led the team with nine total digs.

On Deck

Looking ahead, West Virginia travels to Washington, D.C., for a match against the Bison at Burr Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m. EST. Two days after (Nov.16), Howard closes out the regular season with an away game against Norfolk State at 2 p.m. EST.
