The start of the college football season is just weeks away. On Saturday, August 27 the Bison will be under the bright lights as they take on Alabama State in the Annual Cricket Wireless MEAC/SWAC Challenge at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta. The game will be a part of this year’s college football “Week Zero” as the official kick-off of the 2022 college football season and will be broadcasted live on ESPN at 7 p.m.

This year’s contest is especially noteworthy, as it is the first time in its 18-year history that the Howard Bison will have participated in the Cricket Wireless MEAC/SWAC Challenge. When asked of the unique opportunity for the team, Bison Head Coach Larry addressed the reality of the situation.

“It’s an exciting time, but I think what it brings to the fruition is that we got to have a sense of urgency about where we’re at and what we’re doing each day and in our response to everything that we’re doing, we have to be very intentional in how we do things,” Scott told HBCU Gameday at the MEAC/SWAC Challenge Press Conference. “And every day is just as important as the other day.

Coming off a 3-8 record in competition in 2021, the Bison, under Scott’s tutelage, are surely  hoping that this big stage will help them take a step in the right direction this coming year. There is plenty to be excited about with this year’s program, most notably being incoming freshman running back Eden James, son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Edgerrin James. The Bison also return defensive lineman Darrian Brokenburr and offensive lineman Anim Dankwah, both of whom made the 2023 Shrine Bowl 1000 List, a comprehensive list comprised of the top-1000 all-star game eligible student-athletes at the FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA level.

The Bison will be well represented off the field as well, as the historic HU Showtime Marching Band will be in attendance. Additionally, the voice of HBCU football , Howard University and MEAC Hall of Famer Jay “Sky” Walker will be the color analyst for the ESPN broadcast.
