Fans prepare to say goodbye as Issa Rae’s Emmy nominated comedy drama series “Insecure” premiered its fifth and final season on Oct. 26 exclusively on HBO Max.

With the season’s trailer release, which aired via @InsecureHBO’s and @Issa Rae’s Instagram accounts on Sept. 29, Rae notes that season five is the last season. While leaving some fans shocked and others heartbroken, Rae shared in an interview on The Breakfast Club, with Charlamagne Tha God, Angela Yee and DJ Envy, that this was always the plan. “Since season one I knew that I wanted to have five seasons…it felt like the right amount of time to tell a concise story,” Rae said.

Season five follows Issa Dee as she continues to navigate friendships, relationships and her newfound career as an entrepreneur. “She’s really just focused on trying to figure out how to move forward, if she can move forward and what she’s going to do with a lot of the momentum she built with her business and in her personal life,” Rae shared with Entertainment Tonight.

Between Issa Dee, Molly, Kelli, Tiffany and Lawrence, viewers have watched so many of the characters grow on screen. From the humble beginnings of the characters, and the show’s start as an internet web series, to now receiving the NAACP Image Award and a Peabody Entertainment award, fans have gotten a chance to see Rae grow and come into her own as a creative.

“It has done everything for me…this is where I was birthed in some ways creatively. And with the family we have here, I’m going to miss the people the most,” Rae told Entertainment Tonight.

The show continues to show viewers what’s possible when they dare to create with purpose and serve communities broader than themselves. Rae’s “Insecure” stands as a testament to the beauty of the Black experience, and offers a reflection of self to the black community. “ I hope that folks feel like they got a window into a world that reflected theirs. And characters that reflected them, and their friendships and their romantic relationships…hopefully they felt seen and represented and got to laugh and cry along the way,” Jay Ellis, who plays Lawrence, told Variety Magazine.

In an interview with CBS Mornings, when reflecting on the objective of “Insecure” throughout the seasons, Rae shared, “We all had the mission to open the door and keep the door open and to make sure we created a pipeline.”
