Divine Nine Organizations Step-Off in Homecoming Greek Step Show

There is no step show like a Howard homecoming weekend Greek step show. To kick off homecoming weekend, Howard presented a Greek Step Show in the Cramton Auditorium.

To kick off homecoming weekend, Howard presented a Greek Step Show in the Cramton Auditorium. The Greek step show featured Divine 9 sororities and fraternities along with the Quad-Drew step team.

After events being virtual for more than a year, Bison were hyped to attend a live event. Students were lined up on a Thursday morning at 8 a.m. in front Cramton Auditorium to receive a ticket to the show.

While a fully in person homecoming was initially planned, the university decided to remain vigilant in its fight against COVID-19 and changed homecoming to a hybrid event week. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Howard was limited to giving out tickets and holding the event in Cramton Auditorium. Although only a select few were able to attend the event in person, the step show was live streamed to the public and outsiders.

At the beginning of the show, host DJ Envy from The Breakfast Club came on stage to surprise the students as the host of the 2021 homecoming Greek step show. Bison were on their feet and screaming in excitement to see DJ Envy.

Some students, like freshman Kaylin Brandby, were shocked to see DJ Envy on stage. “I was so shocked and knew that the Greek show was finna be lit with him as host.”

Everyone popped out for the show and brought out the best fits. Courtney Griffin, a freshman bio major stepped out with her pine green Jordans and a fire fit.

“It’s Howard homecoming, you know everyone is going to step out,” Griffin said.

DJ K.Dimes fired up the crowd playing all the anthems and had attendees recording in the aisles dancing.

Many sororities and fraternities stepped throughout the night and the students enjoyed every last bit. As the themes of each shined through their performance, there was one theme that stood out to many. With the new hot series “Squid Games” showing on Netflix, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., the first fraternity on stage, used the hit show as their theme.

Many other themes were popular throughout the night. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., presented the “Pirates of the Caribbean”. The costumes, music and props were perfect. The common theme among the crowd was “period!” and constant applause.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., stepped outside of the box and created their own unique theme, “Music”. Music was also their own fictional record label. Their record label included many songs from artists like Mary J. Blige and Beyoncé.

Not only were the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha stepping, but they were stepping in heels. They ended their show with a stunk and the crowd went crazy.

Other fraternities and sororities including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and the Howard Quad-Drew step team also participated in the Step Show. All participants had the students excited. With DJ Envy, DJ K.Dimes and all participants of the Greek Step Show, attendees were left satisfied.

As the judges deliberated and decided on winners DJ Envy and DJ K.Dimes hyped the crowd up with a swag surf and “Dreams and Nightmares” by Meek Mill, the anthems of Howard Homecoming. There were many flashlights in the air and people singing and swag surfing to end the night before the winners were announced.

After all the music and dancing, the judges announced the winners. Second place fraternity went to Alpha Phi Alpha, and Delta Sigma Theta took home second place. Phi Beta Sigma, and Alpha Kappa Alpha took home first place. Each fraternity and sorority were excited and grateful that their shows were enjoyed by the judges.
